This is a moving story about the outcasts in a slum supporting each other. There are a grandma and her grandson, a sick woman and her daughter, Xiao Zhu. Two positive characters are Santai, who picks up recyclable waste, and a tricycle peddler, Afa, who are hard working and have compassion and senses of justice. And there are also a prostitute and her boyfriend, who sucks on her blood. The film reflects the social reality in 1960s. This film ends Lee’s Taiwan dialect film period and heralded his first successfulperiod as a film director. Due to the success of Our Neighbors, Lee was hired by Central Motion Picture Corporation (CMPC) and started the trends of healthy realist films of CMPC.
