First Perspective Documentary Filmmaking
The aim of documentaries is to guide the audience to examine issues, especially societal ones, from different angles. However, what happens when the lens is flipped around, when the observer becomes the observed and is presented to the audience in the first person perspective? Is such personal disclosure a necessary process to achieve authenticity in their craft? Or is it an aim to break away from the traditional way of documentary film-making? Let us hear from Directors Li Nien-hsiu (Taiwan), Wu Wenguang (China), and Hui See-Wai (Hong Kong) who have chosen to focus their camera lens on their estranged family members, friends, and themselves.
